AI and Web3 are reshaping the UAE’s digital landscape, driving industry and economic change, with events like the Dubai AI and Web3 festival and the launch of the Dubai AI Campus positioning the UAE as a global leader in technological advancement
Whether we realise it or not, the use of AI is becoming increasingly common in our day-to-day lives. From setting daily reminders through AI-powered assistants like Siri and Alexa and receiving recommendations on Spotify or Netflix through AI algorithms to AI-powered chatbots, AI has seamlessly integrated into our routines, enhancing convenience and efficiency. On a larger scale, the power of AI has already transformed many industries globally including healthcare, finance, education, and beyond, playing a major role in the digitalisation of society.
AI has enabled us to collect, process, and analyse large amounts of data at a faster rate than ever before, leading to the creation of new technologies, improved business processes, and greater efficiency. As AI continues to play a crucial role in the digitalisation of society, it is also laying the groundwork for the next evolution of the internet - Web3. Unlike the current internet, Web2, where big companies often own and control the platforms we use, Web3 is built on decentralised technology, which allows for more transparency and user ownership.
By merging AI with decentralised technologies, Web3 is set to empower users with greater control over their personal data and online interactions, making the integration of AI into Web3 not just a technological advancement, but a complete shift in how we interact with the digital world.
Dubai AI and Web3 Festival 2024
Setting the stage for a significant gathering of leading minds in AI, blockchain, and other emerging technologies, the UAE proudly hosted the Dubai AI and Web3 Festival 2024. Organised by the Dubai AI Campus in collaboration with DIFC and the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy & Remote Work Applications Office and taking place at Madinat Jumeirah between September 11th and 12th, the festival shone a spotlight on the UAE’s role as a leader for innovation.
Attendees were treated to an exciting mix of exhibits featuring emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, XR, and decentralised systems, with over 100 stalls from industry heavyweights such as Digital Dubai, HP, and Holon. The event was made even more special by the presence of the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who toured the venue, taking in the latest tech innovations that highlighted Dubai’s position as a leader in the digital economy.
Other highlights included the launch of the Dubai AI Licence, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at attracting AI businesses to the region, alongside the introduction of the “AI as a Service” programme, designed to support businesses in developing AI strategies. Visitors also enjoyed a variety of immersive experiences, from AR and VR simulations to playful interactions like challenging a robot to Tic Tac Toe. The festival was also abuzz with excitement around the Future Tech World Cup, where companies pitched innovative solutions to shape the industries of tomorrow.
In addition to the hands-on tech displays, the festival provided invaluable insights through engaging discussions on the Global Plenary Stage. Day one kicked off with a keynote from Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy & Remote Work Applications, and Director General of the Prime Minister's Office, setting the tone with his talk on “Navigating the Future Through the Lens of AI.” On day two, Caroline Yap, Global Managing Director of AI Business and Applied Engineering at Google Cloud, and Reda Nidhakou, CEO of VentureOne, participated in a fireside chat moderated by Jane Witherspoon, Bureau Chief Middle East at Euronews, where they discussed the importance of shaping the future with diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.
Introducing the Dubai AI Campus
As the organiser of the festival, the Dubai AI Campus is on track to become the largest hub for artificial intelligence and technology companies in the MENA region. Located within Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and backed by the vision of Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this ambitious project will cover over 100,000 square feet, offering the ultimate playground for innovators, entrepreneurs, and tech enthusiasts alike.
At the Dubai AI Campus, you’ll find everything from state-of-the-art R&D labs to accelerator programmes designed to supercharge AI and Web3 technologies, especially in the financial sector. More than just a futuristic workspace, the campus creates a platform for global talent and groundbreaking ideas. Plus, with a regulatory framework tailored to the needs of AI and Web3 companies, the campus is set to keep Dubai at the forefront of technological innovation.
The UAE as an Emerging Figure in Artificial Intelligence and Web3
Beyond the historical festival, the UAE has been behind multiple groundbreaking projects, making significant steps in the field of artificial intelligence. Back in 2017, the UAE made global headlines by appointing the world’s first Minister of State for AI, signalling a bold move towards economic diversification.
On top of this, the UAE is now home to the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, the world’s first AI-focused university, and introduced Falcon, a groundbreaking large language model, putting the nation right at the centre of AI research and development. In addition, the launch of the National AI Strategy 2031 and the integration of AI across key sectors firmly places the UAE on the bandwagon of the latest tech revolution.
The nation is also making waves in the world of Web3 technologies, particularly in gaming. With initiatives like the DMCC Gaming Centre and the Dubai Program for Gaming 2033, the UAE is creating a vibrant ecosystem for gaming and esports enterprises. In fact, the region’s embrace of Play-to-Earn and Play-to-Own games, backed by strong government support, is gearing up to make the UAE a billion-dollar gaming destination by 2025.

Embracing the Future
The future promises even more exciting developments as AI continues to revolutionise industries while Web3 revamps how we interact with the internet. The UAE is perfectly positioned to drive this change, backed by strong government initiatives and the support of tech giants, making it a global hub for the latest digital evolution.
For businesses, there’s no escaping these rapid advancements. Keeping up with trends and investing in the training of their staff on these technologies will be crucial to ensuring they remain well-equipped for the digital age. Whether you welcome these technological advancements with open arms or approach them with caution, they are undeniably here to stay and to keep pace with the future, it’s essential that we learn how to harness these tools effectively.
