The recent Paris Olympics, which had its incredible closing ceremony on Sunday, August 11th, was a spectacular showcase of talented individuals and featured some of the most exhilarating sporting performances in recent memory
As the curtain draws on another glorious summer, we look back on what is always a highlight of the season’s sporting calendar every four years – The Olympics. The Paris 2024 Olympics captivated the world from July 26th to August 11th and it was a true global spectacle, reminding us once again of the unifying power of sports. In a world often divided by differences, the groundbreaking games offered a rare opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together, celebrate human achievement, and witness extraordinary feats of athleticism.
With so many jaw-dropping occurrences throughout its run, this year’s event also demonstrated just how quickly moments can go viral, turning athletes into instant icons and sparking conversations that transcend borders. Televised across the globe, people once again had the opportunity to fall in love with sport and enjoy witnessing the world’s most talented athletes in action, doing what they do best.
The Speed of Virality: From Memes to Inspiration
One of the most remarkable aspects of Paris 2024 was how quickly certain moments captured the world’s attention, with a lot of these predicted to live long in the collective memory. Possibly the most iconic sight to behold was that of the Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec, whose relaxed demeanour and unique shooting style not only earned him a silver medal but also transformed him into a viral sensation. His pose became a symbol of calm under pressure, inspiring athletes across different sports to emulate him, including pole vault gold medallist and world record holder Mondo Duplantis who imitated the 51-year-old’s cold stance with his hand in a make-shift pocket and an outstretched arm holding an imaginary gun.
Similarly, the pregnant Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez and the Azerbaijani archer Yaylagul Ramazanova made headlines for their incredible determination. Competing while pregnant, they sent a powerful message to women everywhere: that strength and perseverance know no bounds. These stories were not just about athletic achievement but about breaking barriers and redefining what it means to be an Olympian.
Then there was Raygun, the 36-year-old Australian breakdancer whose unconventional moves turned her into a meme overnight. While she may not have scored a single point, her creative performance sparked debates about the evolving nature of Olympic sports and the importance of self-expression. Raygun’s story is a reminder that the Olympics is not just about winning medals but about making your mark in whatever way you can.
The Global Stage: A Platform for All
The Olympics have always been a stage where athletes can showcase their talents to the world, and Paris 2024 was no exception. This year, we saw a plethora of athletes from smaller nations making history, proving that you don’t have to come from a sports powerhouse to achieve greatness. Countries like Dominica, Saint Lucia, Cape Verde, and Albania won their first-ever Olympic medals, with some even securing gold, acting as a source of immense pride for their nations.
On a personal note, as a proud Irishman, I was thrilled to see Ireland perform so impressively at these games, achieving the best-ever medal haul in our history including a record third medal in a row and second gold for rower Paul O'Donovan and a consecutive gold for boxer Kellie Harrington, defending her title from Tokyo 2020. Our athletes brought home four gold medals and three bronze, narrowly missing out on several others. Rhasidat Adeleke’s 4th place finish in the women’s 400m was particularly inspiring as at just 21 years old, she became the first Irish athlete to reach a sprint final in athletics, and with such a bright future ahead, it is a real statement of intent for Ireland as a nation.
A Celebration of Diversity in Sports
One of the most beautiful aspects of the Olympics is the sheer diversity of sports on display. Paris 2024 introduced breakdancing as an Olympic sport, giving audiences a chance to see a whole new side of athleticism. From traditional events like athletics and swimming to newer additions like skateboarding and surfing, the games offered something for everyone, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talents in disciplines that many viewers might not have had the chance to watch otherwise.
Bringing the World Together
In a time when the world can feel increasingly fragmented, the Olympics serve as a reminder of our shared humanity. The stories that emerged from Paris 2024—whether they were of triumph, heartbreak, or sheer determination—brought people together in ways that few other events can. The Olympics provided a momentary escape, a chance to rally behind athletes from all corners of the globe, and to celebrate the incredible things that we, as humans, are capable of achieving.
As we look back on the Paris 2024 Olympics, let’s not just remember the records broken or the medals won, but rather the moments that brought us together, the stories that inspired us, and the athletes who, in their own unique ways, left an indelible mark on the world. These scintillating games were more than just a sporting event—they were a celebration of the human spirit in all its diversity, creativity, and strength.
