Don’t get the FOMO and get ready to LOL while we SCUBA dive through a LASER maze of acronyms that have been hiding in plain sight

I was at a pub quiz the other day, and there was a round on acronyms. Our team did, let’s just say, not fantastic (3 out of 10 is a pretty poor showing). After we were pretty confident that GIF stood for “Great Internet Fun” (it doesn’t), I realised that I didn’t know as much about acronyms as I thought. As I dived a bit deeper into the topic, I came to realise that they are all around us, but most of us rarely think about what they actually mean. So, naturally, I decided to write this blog.

What’s in an Acronym?

Acronyms are basically shortcuts in language, words formed from the initial letters of longer phrases. We use them because they save time, they’re catchy, and sometimes, they just roll off the tongue better than the full phrase. Let’s be honest, saying “As Soon As Possible” every time instead of ASAP would be exhausting. Acronyms are the lazy person’s gift to language, and thank goodness for them.

The “Everyone Knows These” Acronyms

There are a few acronyms we all know and use without even thinking. LOL (laugh out loud) has become so common that people now use it even when they’re not actually laughing. FOMO (fear of missing out) perfectly captures that nagging feeling when your friends are out without you. And of course, there’s ASAP (as soon as possible), the universal boss-to-employee code for “I needed this five minutes ago.”

Another set of acronyms has become so deeply ingrained in our day-to-day chats that we don’t even pause to consider them. FYI (for your information) is a polite way of saying “this isn’t optional, you need to know this,” while TMI (too much information) is the equally polite way of saying “please stop oversharing.” Then there’s TBD (to be determined), which is corporate-speak for “we haven’t got a clue yet, but it sounds like we’re on top of it.”

Acronyms in Disguise: Everyday Words With Secret Identities

What about all the acronyms you didn’t even realise are acronyms? Take laser, for example. It’s a pretty cool word, but it actually stands for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.” Science decided that was too much of a mouthful, so laser was born. Similarly, radar is short for “Radio Detection and Ranging,” and sonar for “Sound Navigation and Ranging.” Imagine having to shout “turn on the Sound Navigation and Ranging system” during a submarine emergency, not exactly efficient.

Then there are the ones you definitely use every day. Ever entered your PIN at an ATM? That’s your “Personal Identification Number.” Which means, technically, when you say “PIN number,” you’re really saying “Personal Identification Number number.” The same goes for SCUBA, which isn’t just a cool hobby but “Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.” Much less glamorous when you spell it out, right?

ATM

Then come the modern curveballs. CAPTCHA, the annoying test where you’re asked to prove you’re not a robot by identifying traffic lights in blurry photos, actually stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” Oh, and your beloved Bae? Not just a cute pet name, it actually started as an acronym for “Before Anyone Else,” though let’s be honest, it’s mostly used just because it sounds nice. Even the humble GIF has a proper name: “Graphics Interchange Format,” and yes, we’re still fighting about whether it’s pronounced with a hard G or like the peanut butter brand “Jif.”

The SPAM Myth

One acronym imposter worth calling out is SPAM. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t stand for “Something Pointless And Malicious” or “Send People Annoying Mail.” The truth is much funnier. The term comes from a Monty Python sketch where the word Spam (as in the tinned meat) is repeated so relentlessly that it drowns out the entire dialogue. That sense of overwhelming, unwanted repetition? A perfect metaphor for junk email.

Spam

Acronyms are everywhere, some obvious, some sneaky, some completely misunderstood. Next time you’re LOL-ing at memes, SCUBA diving on holiday, or entering your PIN code, remember that we’re constantly using these linguistic shortcuts without batting an eye. Now, if you ever end up at a pub quiz with an acronyms round, you’ll definitely thank me ASAP.
